Resting Metabolic Rate Testing

Resting metabolic rate testing is a baseline measurement that helps in understanding how your body uses energy. Your resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the number of calories your body burns at rest.

Resting metabolic rate testing can be used as a valuable tool to determine your unique daily calorie needs. It can be helpful in developing a safe, sustainable weight management plan guided by your unique physiology.

At Inclusa Health & Wellness, we offer simple and clinically reliable resting metabolic rate testing using advanced technology to assess your individual metabolic rate. This data allows our team to make informed, data-based decisions about your health and tailor your medical weight loss plans for the best chance of success.

Our evidence-based approach is rooted in accurate measurement and individualized care to support sustainable, long-term well-being.

What is resting metabolic rate (RMR)?

Resting metabolic rate refers to the amount of energy your body requires to carry out essential functions while you are at rest. These include basic body functions like maintaining body temperature, breathing, pumping blood, and low-effort daily activities like eating, using the bathroom, and shivering or adjusting your posture.

It is important to understand that RMR is not the same as Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). BMR measures the minimum number of calories your body needs to stay alive under complete rest. It only accounts for necessary body functions and not for daily activities.

RMR, on the other hand, provides a more practical and slightly higher estimate. It reflects the energy your body uses during typical restful moments throughout the day, but not during exercise.

In other words, RMR is a more accurate and useful number when estimating your actual daily calorie needs, especially for weight management.

Why is RMR testing important for weight loss?

Resting metabolic rate testing offers a clinically reliable and individualized foundation for setting your health and weight management goals.

It provides objective, measurable data on the calorie consumption in your body and helps understand your true caloric needs. This information can help us determine the caloric intake that supports fat loss for you while preserving lean muscle mass.

To lose weight successfully, you have to eat below your metabolic rate. This simply means your body needs to consistently take in fewer calories than it expends, also known as a caloric deficit.

Generalized calorie goals and popular diet plans often do not account for the wide variability in individual metabolic rates and calorie needs. That’s why they often lead to slowed progress, stalled results, or even unintended weight gain.

An accurate measure of your RMR helps avoid these pitfalls by giving you a scientifically grounded starting point. It ensures that any changes to your nutrition or activity levels are based on your individual needs.

How is resting metabolic rate measured?

At Inclusa Health & Wellness, we measure resting metabolic rate using ReeVue® by KORR. It is an FDA-cleared device that delivers fast, accurate results with a simple and comfortable process.

The machine works by measuring the concentration of oxygen you exhale while at rest.

There is a direct relationship between oxygen consumption and calories burned. Your body uses oxygen to convert nutrients like carbohydrates and fats into energy. This means the amount of oxygen you use directly reflects how many calories you are burning.

In fact, there is a measurable relationship: 4.813 calories are burned for every milliliter of oxygen consumed.

This method of measuring metabolism through oxygen consumption is called indirect calorimetry, a gold standard in metabolic testing.

The Testing Process

To get an accurate reading of your resting metabolic rate, your body needs to be in a true resting state. That is why the test is done while you are seated, reclined, or lying down in a calm, quiet environment.

During the test, you will breathe through a comfortable mouthpiece while wearing a nose clip to make sure all your exhaled air is measured. The process is painless, non-invasive, and takes about 10–15 minutes.

If needed, you can briefly remove the mouthpiece to swallow or moisten your lips. Don’t worry, it won’t impact the accuracy of your results.

For the most accurate results, we recommend that you avoid eating, exercising, and consuming stimulants like caffeine for a few hours before your appointment.

Why We Use ReeVue®

We have chosen ReeVue® by KORR because it is one of the most advanced and patient-friendly tools available for measuring RMR. Here is how it helps us serve you better.

Hygienic & FDA-Cleared

The ReeVue® is FDA-cleared and designed with your safety and hygiene in mind. It uses a one-time-use MetaBreather® mouthpiece with a built-in one-way valve, ensuring a clean and hygienic experience. Each patient receives a fresh, disposable mouthpiece, eliminating any risk of cross-contamination.

Non-Invasive & Comfortable

The test is short and stress-free. There is no blood draw, no needles, and no uncomfortable procedures. Just 10–15 minutes of relaxed breathing while seated or lying down.

Fast Results

You will get your results right after the test, no waiting days for lab work. This gives us immediate insight into your metabolism and lets us move forward with an actionable plan the same day.

Self-Calibrating for Accuracy

Accurate RMR measurement also requires factoring in environmental conditions like temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure. The ReeVue® automatically adjusts for these variables before each calibration cycle. It ensures that every result is measured under standard temperature and pressure dry (STPD) conditions. That means accurate and reliable results every time.

Insurance-Covered

Indirect calorimetry is covered by Medicare and most insurance providers, making it an accessible option for many patients. In most cases, RMR testing with the ReeVue® is covered by insurance. That means you may be able to get valuable insight into your metabolism without out-of-pocket costs. We can check your benefits and help you understand your options.

How do we use RMR testing to support your weight loss plan?

At Inclusa Health & Wellness, we use RMR testing as part of a clinically informed approach to weight loss that goes beyond surface-level advice. This tool helps us better understand your body’s unique metabolic profile and guide your weight management journey with true insight.

It helps our team:
